On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

A Historic Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
