This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
