Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
