A trader profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

One account, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other individuals also earned significant sums from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on Monday aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Market Background

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from elections to current affairs.

The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
